A Board Governance Organization Creates Its Own Board

Is it a daunting task to begin work as the Board of Directors for an organization that tells other Boards how to do their best work?

Not at all, reports Lynn Heimbruch, the President of the new Board of Directors for BoardStar, now an independent nonprofit tax-exempt organization in its own right. “I knew that there was a history of support for BoardStar, because it grew out of the Nonprofit Management Fund, which is so reputable in the community. It makes starting less daunting when there is such a strong foundation.”

Even with that foundation, BoardStar’s Directors truly see themselves in start-up mode, which organization founder Patricia Wyzbinski values. “Everyone is pitching in, sleeves rolled up. I feel very lucky to have a working board.” Additionally, BoardStar’s staff feel the diverse, talented group of Directors models the recommendations they make to members and program participants.

By facing their own needs for Board development and training, Directors are able to see for themselves that BoardStar’s work is timely and valuable. Heimbruch reports, “The need for BoardStar’s work has never been higher, and because of turnover, changing IRS rules, and more, the need also never goes away.”
