BoardStar offers Greater Milwaukee OnBoard, a free web-based recruitment and matching service pairing nonprofit Board and committee vacancies with individuals seeking an opportunity to serve.

Greater Milwaukee OnBoard enables organizations to look beyond their immediate circle of friends to diversify and strengthen the Board of Directors, and makes it easy for Board candidates and organizations to find their perfect match. Individuals looking to serve on a Board can browse vacancies, posted by a variety of nonprofit organizations in the greater Milwaukee area, and apply for the Board or committee position that best suits their personal skills and interests.

Getting Started:

Follow the link above to log in or register, then click CREATE ACCOUNT to register for Greater Milwaukee OnBoard, using your e-mail address as a user name and choosing a password of at least eight characters. The process is similar to filling out a job application, and most users are able to complete the profile in less than 30 minutes.

 

Helpful Hints:

Specific search information leads to the best quality matches. Organizations should specify whether they are seeking Board or committee candidates, select currently needed skills, and update their profile as Board and committee compositions change. For individuals it is best to limit preferences to mission interests that reflect your passions, budget sizes with which you are likely to enjoy working, and the geographic area that you are willing to serve. Use the text fields to highlight your strengths, passions and limitations, and to explain your specific skills, attributes and needs.


When your profile is complete
and you log back in to the GMOB site the next day (matches are made overnight), a list of matching profiles will appear. If your preferences are general there will be a greater number of potential matches, but they will not be as tailored to your interests. Matching criteria between candidates and individuals is highlighted in bold. New matches and profiles that have requested more information will appear at the top of the list when you log in, and will be highlighted with a star.


View available information.
There is a small text button just under the release/request information buttons at the bottom of each profile that opens the profile to reveal more complete information. Once the profile opens, there is a text button in the same relative position, view less information, that closes the profile to save room. You must open the profile to view any additional information that has been released.


Revise your profile to adjust the number of matches. For instance a candidate might try just selecting one or two mission interests to reduce the number of matches, or an organization might increase the number of skills they are currently seeking to see a larger pool of candidates. Any profiles with whom information has been exchanged will remain as matches, but other matches will be re-sorted based on the new parameters.

 

Sort order is in your control. You may sort matches by: overlap of interests, amount of information requested/received, login date or activity date. Try changing the sort order as you decide which profiles to pursue.

  • Time of last activity brings new matches or recent information releases to the top.
  • Time of last login brings the most recently active profiles forward.
  • Amount of information requested or released will bring up profiles that have released information, or from whom information has been requested. Profiles that have released full contact information will sort to the top
  • Match quality brings forward profiles with the greatest number of overlapping interests.

Request information from any profiles that seem like a good match, using the buttons at the bottom of each profile. You may release your information at any time in the process, using the buttons for release additional information, (everything except contact information) or release all information (includes contact information), depending on your level of interest. If you delete a profile that does not fit your interests the other party will receive notice, and their profile will be permanently deleted from your matches.

 

Log in regularly and respond to requests for information. The more active you are in using the service, the greater your likelihood of a successful Board or committee match. You will receive weekly notification of new matches, but it is necessary to log in to view the information. 

 

Once contact information has been exchanged, either party can phone or e-mail to begin personal communication. Think of the process as a hiring search. BoardStar does not have a screening process for organizations or candidates, and cannot vouch for the veracity of any information represented in the profiles. It might be helpful to define a list of questions ahead of time, and to consider using committee service as a starting point before Board placement. A Board Development committee might be assigned to proceed with follow-up, orientation and eventual placement. 

 

Your information will not be sold or used by third parties. You are in complete control of when and to whom to release your general profile and your personal contact information. Demographic information is collected in order to help nonprofit Boards diversify and better represent the communities they serve.
